Liverpool shooting: Man shot dead in Kirkby

A man has been shot dead on a street in the Kirkby suburb of Liverpool, police say.

Merseyside Police said a murder investigation was under way after the 36-year-old was shot on Quarryside Drive on Wednesday evening.

The victim – who has not yet been named – was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

The shooting took place near Liverpool FC’s training ground.

“A murder investigation is under way this evening following an appalling and tragic incident in which a man has lost his life after he was fatally shot,” Detective Superintendent Mark Drew said in a statement.

“Our thoughts first and foremost are with his family, who are trying to come to terms with his loss.”

Police said the family had been informed and would be supported by specialist family liaison officers.

The shooting happened on Quarryside Drive at around 18:35, the force said.

Extensive CCTV enquiries are under way in the area and house-to-house inquiries are taking place. Forensic examinations are also being carried out at the scene of the crime.

Det Supt Drew called on the public to contact police if they witnessed the attack, and asked people to check their CCTV, dashcam devices or doorbell footage for anything suspicious.

“There is no room for guns on the streets of Merseyside and we will do everything within our power to ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.

“My message to those involved in gun crime and serious organised crime is clear – Merseyside Police will never rest, we are relentless in our pursuit of those involved.”
