British hiker dead and another missing in Majorca

The body of a British hiker has been found in Majorca, with another person still missing, after being caught up in flash floods, police on the Spanish island say.

Spain’s Civil Guard said they were on a trail through the Torrente de Pareis canyon to the Mediterranean Sea when the storm hit on Tuesday.

Ten other tourists who were trapped by the floods were rescued, police said. Strong winds and heavy rain have been forecast in the area.

The Foreign Office has confirmed to the BBC that it is “supporting the families of a British man and woman who are missing in Majorca and are in contact with the local authorities”.

The Civil Guard has released footage of a search-and-rescue team helping a group of hikers stuck in the area.

The head of the Mountain Rescue Group brigade in the Balearic islands said the 10 people they had rescued “were surprised by the storm”.

“They were the ones who told us that they had seen two people who had been swept away by the water,” Juan Carlos Rodriguez said.

Local authorities had warned of “very intense storms” and urged people to avoid outdoor activities.

“The body found is that of a woman and the missing person is a man,” Spanish police said in a statement on Wednesday.

They added that the search had been paused because of poor weather conditions.
